A checklist for the papers you need to assemble to do your tax return.
A list of tasks for closing down your office in the evening (e.g. close filing cabinets, turn off computers, switch on alarm).
A shopping list.
Closed lists like these make working much easier. Mick Cool finds his work much less stressful than Joe Slobb does. Not only that, he gets more done and gives a better service to his customers.
Now let’s have a look at one of the most important characteristics of closed lists.
Imagine that you have a completely clear day in which all you have to do is get through a list of twenty items. You are guaranteed no interruptions and that nothing will be added to the list (well, I did say this was imaginary!). None of the items on the list depends on another and none of them is so urgent that it has to be completed before the end of the day.
You can go home just as soon as you’ve finished the list – but not before.
In your imagination, you can see that the items on the list vary a lot. Some of them are bigger than others, some are more difficult, some are more unpleasant, some are more urgent, some are more important, and so on.
Before you read any further, answer this question: What is the best order to do the items on the list? Tick the order on the list below that you think would be best:
